Boosting Engineering Science and Technology Inc. ("BESTinc") is an organization that promotes STEM learning among high school students. They teach students to analyze and solve problems using the engineering design process. Furthermore, they teach students essential skills, not only marketing, publicity and presentational skills, but leadership, communication, and collaboration skills. BESTinc was founded in 1993 by Steve Marum and Ted Mahler, engineers at Texas Instruments. With generous support from TI, BESTinc has grown into a competition that spans the nation, from North Dakota to New Mexico. BESTinc aims to increase the amount of bright young students interested in engineering. BESTinc’s goal is to provide experiential STEM learning resources for rural and inner city schools, minority students, and women interested in engineering.
Here at MV Hawks Robotics, we believe that BESTinc has provided amazing opportunities for the students who participate. Students who had never considered STEM related careers are now fledgeling engineers. Students learn how to learn from previous years, and improve their product until they win. The pervasive lessons of leadership, communication, and collaboration have benefitted the members of the team immeasurably. Our participation in BESTinc has opened doors where students didn't even know doors existed. The collaborative, experiential, interdisciplinary learning that students engage in while working is unparalleled in any other opportunity.
